Stationary awnings are much easier to build and install because you do not have to worry about the mechanics of making it extending or retracting. Many people prefer this type of awning to cover areas of their yard such as a garden or a window. These are also known as fixed awnings and are often made of aluminum, copper, or metal.
A more common type of canopy for an outdoor area such as a balcony or porch is a retractable awning. These are made of a canvas and have the ability to extend or retract. This allows you to decide when you want sunlight or shade in your outdoor area.
3. What size and design do you want?
Awnings come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and designs. If you build your own awning to cover a brick porch or a patio, you will have to decide ahead of time what kind of materials you will wan tto use. You will have to get all the specific measurements of the intended area and make sure that everything matches perfectly. Again, this greatly depends on whether you want a fixed awnings or a retractable one. One of the deciding factors for many people is how much their budget will allow. Awnings are definitely less expensive when you buy the raw materials and build it yourself. But many people prefer the convenience of having someone do it for them.
